Plotiva

A quiet place to write screenplays. Private by default.

This one is yours. No deadlines, no one reading over your shoulder, nothing to lose if it goes badly. Just the page, for whenever you have something to put on it.

Screenplay format, without the formatting

Plotiva is a free screenwriting app that runs in your browser, with nothing to install. Type, and it lays the page out the way a screenplay is read: scene headings in capitals, action across the full measure, character names centred above their dialogue, parentheticals and transitions where they belong. Tab and Enter move between elements, so your hands stay on the keyboard and the margins take care of themselves.

Pages are set to the industry measure (twelve-point Courier, the standard margins), so a page here is about a minute on screen, and a draft that runs a hundred and ten pages here runs a hundred and ten pages anywhere else.

What you can do with a draft

  • Export a PDF with a proper title page, ready to send or print.
  • Import and export Fountain, the plain-text screenplay format, so a script can move to Final Draft, Highland, Fade In or a plain text editor and back.
  • Find your way around with a scene navigator, find and replace, coloured revision drafts and a running page and word count.
  • Keep writing offline. The editor loads from your own machine, so a train or a dead connection changes nothing.

What it costs, and who can read it

Nothing, and no one. Plotiva is free, with no trial and no page limit. Signed out, every word stays in your own browser and no server is ever sent a line of it. Signing in with Google adds a backup and lets you pick a script up on another device, and only your own account can read your scripts. The privacy policy says exactly what is stored and when.

Private

Or write without an account.

Nothing is sent anywhere, no server sees a word of it. It stays in this browser, so keep a .fountain copy if you want it on another computer.

Why this exists

I built this for my girlfriend. A novelist who writes screenplays too, she needed somewhere to do it without anyone reading over her shoulder, without an account to set up, without anything she typed leaving her own browser unless she chose to send it somewhere.

That is still the whole idea. Opening it up to other writers hasn't changed any of it: it's free, it stays on your device unless you sign in, and nobody but you sees a page until you decide to show them.
